Free Legal Help

Legal Aid commissions, community legal centres and court-based guides for people who cannot afford a private lawyer — listed by state and territory.

Legal advice and financial counselling are different things, and it is worth understanding which you need before seeking help. A financial counsellor helps you manage your financial situation, understand your debt options and negotiate with creditors — this is practical support, not legal advice. A lawyer advises you on your legal rights, represents you in court or tribunal proceedings, and can assess whether a debt is legally enforceable. In many debt situations, you may benefit from seeing both. This page focuses on free legal help; for financial counselling see the Financial Hardship Help directory page.

National Association of Community Legal Centres

Community legal centres (CLCs) are independent, non-profit organisations that provide free legal information, advice and in some cases representation to people who cannot afford a private lawyer. There are over 200 CLCs across Australia, operating in metropolitan, regional and remote areas. Many specialise in specific areas including consumer credit, debt, tenancy and family law. The National Association of Community Legal Centres (NACLC) is the peak body and operates a centre finder.

Legal Aid commissions — by state and territory

Each state and territory has a Legal Aid Commission that provides free or subsidised legal services to eligible individuals. Eligibility is generally based on income, assets and the nature of the matter. For debt-related matters, Legal Aid commissions often provide advice without a means test (particularly for telephone advice lines), and representation in some tribunal and court proceedings.

Self-represented litigant resources

If you are representing yourself in court or tribunal proceedings — sometimes called a self-represented litigant or litigant in person — most courts and tribunals publish guides and resources to help you navigate the process. These guides cover filing documents, court etiquette, preparing for a hearing and understanding decisions. Each court maintains its own resources; contact the registry for the court or tribunal handling your matter.

A note on financial counsellors

Financial counsellors are professionally trained to help people in financial difficulty — they can assess your options, negotiate with creditors on your behalf and refer you to legal help where it is needed. Their services are free. The National Debt Helpline (call 1800 007 007, Mon–Fri 9:30am–4:30pm AEST) connects you with a qualified financial counsellor. Financial counsellors are separate from lawyers and cannot give legal advice, but they are often the right first step when you are dealing with a debt problem.
