Business activity statement (BAS)

The ATO form on which registered businesses report and pay GST and certain other tax obligations.

What it means

A business activity statement, or BAS, is the form registered businesses use to report to the ATO and pay obligations such as GST, and depending on your circumstances, PAYG instalments and PAYG withholding. It reconciles the GST you have collected against the GST credits you can claim.

Lodging your BAS accurately and on time keeps you compliant and avoids interest or penalties.

Frequency and obligations

How often you lodge a BAS, what it must include, and the due dates depend on your registration and turnover — these are set by the ATO, so check with the ATO or your accountant for the rules that apply to you. Accurate records, including your tax invoices and a clean general ledger, make BAS preparation far simpler.
