Northern Territory Courts & Tribunals

The full hierarchy of courts and tribunals in the Northern Territory for civil debt claims — from NTCAT to the NT Supreme Court.

The Northern Territory has a three-tier civil court structure — NTCAT for small civil disputes, the Local Court for claims up to $100,000, and the Supreme Court for larger and more complex matters. Like Tasmania, the NT does not have a separate District or County Court; the Supreme Court is the intermediate and superior court. All monetary thresholds are subject to legislative change — always verify current limits at the relevant court's website before filing.

Note that Merion's primary operating jurisdictions are Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT. The information below is provided as a reference for Northern Territory matters.

NTCAT — Northern Territory Civil and Administrative Tribunal

NTCAT handles small civil claims up to $25,000 (as at the date of this page — check the NTCAT website for current limits), as well as tenancy disputes, guardianship and a range of administrative review matters. Proceedings are designed to be accessible without legal representation. Applications can be lodged online or in person at the NTCAT registry.

Local Court of the Northern Territory

The Local Court of the Northern Territory handles civil debt claims up to $100,000 (as at the date of this page — verify current limits at the court's website). It is the primary venue for commercial debt enforcement in the NT above the NTCAT threshold. The court issues default judgments and enforcement orders. Parties may be legally represented. The Local Court sits in Darwin, Alice Springs and Katherine.

Legal representation is expected in all Supreme Court proceedings.
