Tasmania Courts & Tribunals
The full hierarchy of courts and tribunals in Tasmania for civil debt claims — from TASCAT to the Tasmanian Supreme Court.
Tasmania has a three-tier civil court structure — TASCAT for civil and administrative matters, the Magistrates Court for commercial debt enforcement up to $50,000, and the Supreme Court for larger and more complex matters. As Australia's smallest state, Tasmania does not have a separate District or County Court — the Supreme Court is the intermediate and superior court. All monetary thresholds are subject to legislative change — always verify current limits at the relevant court's website before filing.
Note that Merion's primary operating jurisdictions are Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT. The information below is provided as a reference for Tasmanian matters.
TASCAT — Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal
TASCAT is Tasmania's unified civil and administrative tribunal, established in 2021. It consolidates the functions of a number of previous tribunals. TASCAT's civil jurisdiction covers residential tenancy, guardianship and administration, and other civil matters within the scope of its enabling legislation. For civil debt claims, check the TASCAT website for current jurisdictional limits, as these may have changed since this page was published.
